Tattoo Aftercare

🖋️ The Apt.144 Handpoke Aftercare Ritual

A handpoked tattoo is a collaboration between the artist’s precision and your skin’s ability to heal. Treat your new ink with the same reverence you give your 14k gold.

1. The Initial Reveal (The First 2–4 Hours)

Your tattoo will be wrapped immediately after the session to protect it from airborne bacteria.

The Wait: Keep your bandage or wrap on for at least 2 hours. If your artist used a medical-grade adhesive film (SecondSkin), follow their specific timeline, but generally, this can stay on for 3–5 days unless it leaks or peels.

The Removal: When it’s time to remove the wrap, do so with clean hands under lukewarm running water. This helps the adhesive slide off without pulling on the fresh ink.

2. The Art of the Cleanse

Handpoked tattoos need to breathe, but they must stay clean.

The Soap: Use a mild, fragrance-free, liquid antibacterial soap (like Dial Gold or an unscented baby wash).

The Technique: Gently wash the area using only your clean fingertips. Do not use a washcloth or loofah—these are too abrasive and harbor bacteria.

The Dry: Pat the area dry with a fresh paper towel. Avoid bath towels, as they can leave lint in the tattoo or carry lingering bacteria.

3. Controlled Hydration

The goal is to keep the skin supple, not "wet." Over-moisturizing is the most common mistake and can lead to "ink fallout" or clogged pores.

The First 48 Hours: Usually, you don’t need anything. Let the skin settle.

The Lotion: After the second day, apply an extremely thin layer of unscented, alcohol-free lotion (like Lubriderm or Aveeno)

The "Less is More" Rule: If the tattoo looks shiny or greasy, you’ve applied too much. Gently blot the excess away with a paper towel.

🚫 The Golden "Don’ts" (The Lockdown Period)

To maintain the integrity of the handpoked dots, you must avoid these for at least 2 weeks:

No Soaking: This is the most critical rule. No baths, no pools, no hot tubs, and no oceans. Showers are fine, but do not let the tattoo submerge. Water can soften the skin and "pull" the ink out before it’s settled.

No Picking or Scratching: As the tattoo heals, it may get itchy or develop tiny flakes (similar to a peeling sunburn). This is normal. Do not pick. Picking pulls the ink from the deeper layers of the skin, leading to gaps in the design.

No Sun Exposure: Fresh ink and UV rays do not mix. Keep the tattoo covered by loose clothing. Do not apply sunscreen to a fresh tattoo—wait until it is fully healed (about 3 weeks).

No Tight Clothing: Avoid friction. If your new ink is on your ribs, waist, or ankles, wear loose, breathable fabrics like silk or cotton to prevent the ink from being rubbed away.

✨ Long-Term Maintenance: The Archive Glow

Once your handpoked tattoo has finished peeling and the skin feels smooth again (usually 14–21 days), it has officially joined your archive.

Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable: UV rays are the #1 cause of tattoo fading. To keep your handpoked dots sharp and dark, apply SPF 30+ whenever the tattoo is exposed to the sun.

Hydration: Healthy, hydrated skin holds ink better. Keep your skin moisturized daily to maintain the "fresh" look of the tattoo.

đźš© When to Reach Out

While handpoked tattoos have a lower risk of trauma, listen to your body. Contact the studio if you experience:

Extreme swelling or redness that spreads away from the tattoo site.

A fever or "flu-like" symptoms shortly after your session.

Discharge that is thick, green, or foul-smelling.
